We’ve got another great new munchie on our shelves to let you know about, in case you haven’t tried it yet, which you should. Most definitely you should.
Here is Lilly’s Hummus.

Lilly’s Kalamata Olive Hummus

Lilly’s started out selling her hand-crafted artisan hummus at the Portland Farmer’s Market in Portland, Oregon where they quickly took off. People loved them so much she soon had to expand, setting up shop in a 6,500-square foot kitchen to keep up with the demand. It’s easy to understand why once you taste them. Six flavors – Traditional, Roasted Garlic, Roasted Red Pepper, Kalamata Olive (my favorite!), Smoked Tomato & Basil and Roasted Jalapeno – great for dipping, adds a kick to sandwiches, as an interesting pizza sauce/base, cooked up on a quesedilla…(hhmmm, I’m thinking of the Kalamata Olive on a quesedilla with a sprinkling of feta cheese, tomatoes and arugula, AWW YEAH)…

All six varieties of Lilly’s Hummus are trans-fat and gluten-free and made
without preservatives. They use only organic garbanzo beans, quality olive oil and local-to-Portland-sourced hand-roasted vegetables. “Hand-roasted,” isn’t that time-consuming? Lilly tells us “Hand-roasting fresh vegetables such as red bell peppers, jalapeno peppers and smoked tomatoes, does take longer, but we are of the belief that crafting food is a gratifyingly creative experience.” We agree. Taking that extra step, putting that little bit more of caring into a dish – it really pays off, as it does here.

Anyway, stop in and give them a try – at 2 for $5 for a 12-oz. tub (hummus is usually half that size), you’d be crazy not to! Looking for more feedback? Check out this great review Lilly’s got in Glamour Magazine.

And now, for an adorable photo of the kids. HOW CUTE ARE THEY OMGZ.

New Product Spotlight: A-Dorot-ble

New Product Spotlight

Every once in a while, a new product comes in that is so wicked-cool, we kind of want to shout it from the rooftops, do cartwheels, marry it. This is one of them.

Picture this scenario, if you will – if you’re an avid cook, you’ve lived it. You get ready to start cooking dinner and your recipe calls for 2 tablespoons of chopped cilantro – d’oh! You don’t have cilantro just laying around, who does? You know why? Because you use the 4 stalks you need and the rest goes to waste because, really, what are you going to do with all that cilantro? Or ginger – when I stir-fry, I use a little bit of chopped ginger and the rest I find sad. mushy and wrapped in plastic in the back of my fridge 2 months later. (Honestly, haven’t we all said too, “I’ll just DRY what’s left” and ended up with something resembling a dead bouquet of flowers?)

To the rescue – Dorot Frozen Herbs. Grown on Kibbutz Dorot in Israel (which is also home to a working farm, over 3500 acres), Dorot picks the herbs, chops ’em, packs them and flash-freezes them fresh off the field. The really cool part? THIS:

recipe from Abby

We’ve been getting requests for the recipes our guest chefs come up with and I keep forgetting to post them! Here’s a great detoxifying raw soup, Abby Cahn-Anton’s Creamy Sea of Green, packed with nutrients and a few dashes of  spice for a little kick.
Creamy Sea of Green Soup
by Abby Cahn Anton of SuperSimpleSuperFoods.com
1 avocado
4 cups baby spinach
1 – 2 Tbs raw apple cider vinegar
2 cups water
1 cucumber
¼ – ½ cup dulse
1 tsp fresh ginger
1½ tsp Sunfire salt
½ tsp black pepper
pinch cayenne
pinch mustard powder
1 tsp spirulina powder (opt.)
1 tsp blue green algae flakes or 4 tsp liquid (opt.)
Place all ingredients (except blue green algae) in blender in order listed. Begin blending at low speed for a few moments, then blend on high until desired consistency (1 – 2 minutes). Be careful not to over-blend as that will degrade delicate nutrients. Add optional blue green algae and blend on low for a couple of seconds. For maximum freshness, enjoy within a few hours. Yield 5 cups.
Bon appetit!

Now for something really different.

Hey there! We hope everyone had a great holiday season. Don’t know about you, but I am more than ready for a New Year’s detox after the past few days of food-stuffed gatherings!

We’re always getting new and exciting products in, quite a few of them brought in by our Grocery buyer, James L. This particular item really has us psyched – it’s healthy, really different than anything we’ve seen before and we are the only store in New Jersey to carry it.

It’s The Pure Wrap. 60 calories. Raw. Gluten-free. 9 grams of carbs. Non-GMO Project Verified. No bread, no grains, no soy. It’s a wrap made of coconut meat. Continue reading

(Vegan) (and Raw) Foodie Fun

Hello there! We hope you had a nice Thanksgiving and got a nice start to your holiday shopping.

Coming this Saturday, Dec. 3rd, we’ve got a great free lecture you may want to check out – Flu-Proof Your Winter: Simple Strategies to Beat the Flu with our own Maryjane Mercovich, M.S., Nutritionist and Homeopathic Educator. Many of you know Mary Jane from our Nutrition aisles – she is literally a walking encyclopedia of nutrition! Well, she’s going to give out some of her tips for avoiding the flu this season – and what to do if you get it – naturally, of course. She’ll be in Ocean at 1pm and Shrewsbury at 3 pm. Just think, an hour spent learning from her may save you a week of being sick! (That old “Ounce of prevention, pound of cure” thing)

Vegan and raw foods have come a long, long way, far from just a few years ago, when the general public thought of the diet as “rabbit food” or existing on nuts and plain salads. Vegan and raw chefs have become true innovators to meet the needs and demands of these quickly-growing lifestyles; more and more people are changing their diets and the chefs are stepping up to the plate to come up with more interesting, nutritious, good-tasting food and gourmet options. Like Good Karma Vegan Cafe and Live Jolly Foods. Continue reading

Time to give thanks – and EAT :)

It’s official: Holiday Season 2011 is here. Get ready for the roller coaster that runs now through to New Year’s, right? Running around, shopping, decorating, planning menus, cooking…it’s all good – family, friends and of course, FOOD.

We can certainly help with the food part. This year, we’re doing something a bit crazy – our THANKSGIVING 99 CENT SALE.

We’ve don’t know about you, but we haven’t found prices on organics like these anywhere else. I did see a local big box advertising organic garnet & jewel yams at $1.89/lb and I’ve seen similar prices in conventional produce but these items, organic for 99 cents? (Hrmm, ideas for dishes to bring to Mom’s for Thanksgiving are flowing…)

We found this recipe for Squash, Sweet Potato and Corn Chowder on Veg Kitchen with Nava Atlas. It’s a great starter for Thanksgiving, it’s low in fat, high in nutrients, gluten-free and is 100% vegan too. The rice milk adds a bit of creaminess and the sweet potato and the little bit of puree add the thickness to make this a hearty favorite. (Note: You can really play around with flavors on this dish by subbing out spices, like adding in some bell peppers, tomatoes, chipotle, chili powder and cayenne for a more Southwestern taste.)

Please Don’t Pass the Nuts™

Goodness gracious there’s a lot going on! Here’s some of the big news we couldn’t wait to share – we are *so* excited to be hosting a very special guest on October 30th: (drum roll please! druuuummmmmm…)

LECTURE & BOOK SIGNING WITH SLOANE MILLER, Author of Allergic Girl: Adventures in Living Well with Food Allergies

We first heard of Sloane after discovering her award-winning – and really funny – blog, Please Don’t Pass the Nuts. Allergic to milk, tree nuts and salmon (plus intolerant to a few other foods and some environmental allergies to boot), Sloane realized one day that although there were sites about food allergies, there were none with practical life advice such as which restaurants are allergy-friendly, how to deal with allergies in social contexts with friends and romantic relationships, what to do when traveling, etc. So, she started her own blog to talk about her experiences and how she has learned to not let any of her allergies stop her from living her life to the fullest.

A few years later, her book Allergic Girl: Adventures in Living Well with Food Allergies was published. “I wanted to share my experience and connect with other people with food allergies, as well as talk about what I was going through when dining out, traveling, and dating,” Sloane said. “Living with food allergies can be challenging – even scary. It can and should also be joyful. Reliable, clear information and support make the difference.” (via CDMRP)

I think all of us know someone who has food allergies (shrimp, uuuggghh), dealing with them each and every day is a way of life – let Allergic Girl Sloane Miller give you some real-life everyday tips on how to make the best out of every situation.

Check out the book trailer:

We welcome Sloane and know you’ll all love Allergic Girl!

Funny how things work out

The funniest thing happened today. Well, not funny-funny but “funny” in the way of how things happen for a reason and coincidences.

We get emails every day for all kinds of reasons, usually customers asking if we have certain products and inquiries from potential vendors telling us about their products. Today we received one of those inquiries that made me go “Hrrmm…interesting.”

The email was from a guy named Ray, telling us about a new product called Heart Juice. He described it as “an all-natural beverage formulated for heart health and is fortified with Hawthorn and Resveratrol along with 5 other heart healthy ingredients.” I looked up their website and read a little about it – all-natural, 20 calories per bottle, antioxidant-rich ingredients such as hawthorn, resveratrol, garlic, pomegranate and green tea.  – and they’re local, from Wayne, NJ. I forwarded the email to our Grocery Manager Owen and told him a little bit about them.

About a half hour later, I’m out by the front and a man comes up to introduce himself to me. “Hi, I’m John, I’m from Heart Juice…” “Really? I seriously JUST emailed you guys back! Owen, remember the company I was telling you about a few minutes ago? Ta-daaa!” Turns out his partner got the email, not even knowing his associate was right there in one of our stores.

Owen and John spoke for a bit and right there we knew, this product was something completely different and special – specifically formulated for heart health and also totally on-point with our mission to raise health awareness and change people’s lives. What a great fit.

An hour later, Heart Juice is on our shelves.

(Ocean location only for now) In BOTH stores now!

What’s New at Dean’s

Hey hey hey!

We’re always on the lookout for great new items to bring into our stores for you. In the past couple of weeks, we’ve got some really exciting new things to tell you about.

Back in July, we attended the Red Bank screening of Forks Over Knives, giving out samples of some of our favorite vegan nibbles. At the stand next to us we met Chef Zoe of RAWbundant   and were able to try some of her raw & organic dishes. We were hooked. She has the most amazing raw “cheeses” made with 100% raw organic cashews from Bali, either feta-style or cream cheese-style, original, garlic & herb or with cracked black pepper. They’re dairy, egg, soy, GMO and gluten-free and absolutely delish. Plus she’s local too, right up in Linden, NJ. She’ll be in Ocean sampling on Friday (8/12), you’ve gotta try them!

DIRT? Todd’s Dirt. Yep, we all chuckled at this one too when Owen, our Grocery Manager in the Ocean store brought this new product to us. Owner/inventor Todd tried for years to duplicate a friend’s seasoning recipe, only to stumble upon one he liked even better, thus The Dirt was born. 100% all-natural and allergen/gluten-free, Todd’s Dirt is one of those favorite catch-all seasonings, great on anything from steak to popcorn. We’re experimenting in our kitchens with it, doing a dry rub on tofu steaks and spicy sweet potatoes. Pick some up and let us know what you come up with!

OK, here’s another one we were like “What?” when we got it in. Betty Lou’s Powdered Peanut Butter.  100% organic, 85% less fat than regular peanut butter, no cholesterol, low sodium and only 45 calories per serving, Betty Lou’s Powdered Peanut Better is quickly becoming a favorite for weight watchers, as a post-workout pick-me-up, or a healthy snack for kids

What else….OH! The Candle Cafe Vegan Pastries! I mentioned them the other day on Facebook and they’re almost gone now, but don’t worry, we’ll get more. My personal favorite is the mini chocolate mousse tart with the lemon-poppy mini muffins running a very close second 🙂

Check back with us now and then for more new item updates and remember, if you find an amazing food, drink, beauty product, etc. that you think we simply MUST carry, let us know!
