C is for Cindy…and Vitamin C

Just because winter is over does not mean the vitamin C should be put away.  Especially for those who suffer with allergies and asthma. Allergy season is here and vitamin C, or L-ascorbic acid, plays a vital role in keeping them at bay.

Did you know vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant and is needed for about 300 metabolic functions? Our bodies cannot produce vitamin C, so, it is crucial for our health to obtain it through foods or supplements.


Clinical studies show that vitamin C intake benefits the body in many ways including: 

 Improving asthma & allergies
• Boosting immunity
• Reducing cancer rates
• Protecting against pollution and cigarette smoke
• Aiding wound healing
• Strengthening capillaries and connective tissue
• Reducing inflammation

Yes, that’s right, ORGANIC AVOCADOS 5 FOR $5. We’re sorry to brag, but you can barely get conventional ‘cados at that price! Actually, we’re not going to be humble for a moment, our organic produce can go head-to-head price-wise with a lot of big box competitors, see for yourself on our website. ANYWAY…

Avocados, so good for you! What are some health benefits of avocados?  They provide over 20 essential nutrients and lots of them, including folate (beneficial for your heart) potassium (60% more than a banana!) and the “good fat.” What is the good fat? Well, it’s raw, plant-based fat, or monounsaturated fat, which besides being essential for body and brain function, also boosts the amount of nutrition absorbed of other fruits and veggies eaten with it. This good fat has also been proven to lower cholesterol, substantially. Plus, they’re delicious, it’s a win-win!

Now on to the good stuff: recipes. We did one for guacamole back around the Super Bowl, but here’s one which sounds even better: Ridiculously Good Guacamole in Five Minutes from Michael Natkin’s Herbivoracious blog. (Love this site!) But avocados are good for so many other recipes other than guac, here are a few you may enjoy:

Linguine with Avocado and Arugula Pesto? Oh Giada, you so crazy.

Avocado & Olive Quesedillas, now there’s an interesting idea! (Personally, I’d add a little tomato too)

A spiced-up classic: Spicy Grilled Bacon, Tomato & Avocado Sandwich (switch out the bacon with Fakin’ Bacon to make it veggie)

Maybe a simple Raw Kale & Avocado Salad recipe on the side.

Speaking of freezing, you can freeze avocados for later use. We’ve read that halves or slices don’t really do so hot, but mashed works great. Here’s the gist:

– Core out and mash your avocados.

– For each avocado, add one tablespoon of fresh lemon or lime juice, mix in well.

– Put into airtight container, ziplock freezer bags seem to be best. Squeeze out all the air you can.

– Zip, date and freeze. When ready to use, defrost in the fridge for 24 hours and voila – Avocadoliciousness!

Guilt-free Goodies

“Raw food is the preparation of whole uncooked foods. In this way of preparing foods, all the living enzymes and nutrients stay alive to aid the body in healing on a cellular level. Raw foods are never processed over 118 degrees; beyond this temperature the food loses its nutritional value.”

That sounds so scientific, doesn’t it? It’s quite the opposite though – uncooked, unprocessed whole foods as nature intended. Wait, even that sounded a bit too scientific. Let’s break that mood:

Introducing our new line of raw foods and guilt-free desserts. Not only are they guilt-free, they’re actually good for  you. Seriously!
Let’s take the Superfoods Cacao Mint Tart, for example. it’s a delicious crunchy-crusted little pie with a creamy, minty chocolatey filling – Chef Brian says “It tastes to me just like an Andes Candy!” It has the amazing taste down, and then we boosted the health benefits – we added in superfoods like maca, which is known to boost energy, balance hormones and support endocrine health; cacao, which has been shown to help the cardiovascular system (chocolate is good for your heart!); and spirulina, the high protein, nutrient-dense, immune boosting blue-green algae.

It’s not just desserts, either – you’ve just gotta try the Raw Vegan “Spaghetti & Meatballs.” We made “pasta” out of zucchini without cooking it, paired it with “meatballs” made of a walnut base and topped it all in dollops of our raw marinara sauce (which has quite a nice kick!). You’ve got protein from the walnuts, which are among the highest in Omega-3s around and have also been shown to help lower cholesterol.  Then there’s the zucchini, high in vitamin C, manganese, B vitamins and antioxidants and tomatoes from the sauce, well, come on, they’re tomatoes. No explanation necessary.
Right now these are available only in our Ocean location but we’ll be rolling them out to Shrewsbury soon as well. Give ’em a try and let us know what you think (PS: You don’t need to register to comment!)

Halloween Weekend & Other Things

Big weekend coming up – Halloween on deck! We’ve got a Halloween costume contest going on between the employees of both stores on Monday, should be pretty fun, I’ll post pictures next week. What are you going to be for Halloween?

But before that, this Sunday is Super Sunday! Once a month we bring you a great day of sales, sampling and demos and this time we’re dedicating it to allergy-friendly foods in honor of our special guest speaker Sloane Miller. Enjoy samples from great companies such as Mary’s Gone Crackers, Enjoy Life Foods, Glutino and many more. Our friends from Heart Juice will be there too, sampling out their delicious heart-healthy antioxidant-packed berry drinks. Keep a lookout on Friday when we post what the sales will be, there are some good ones!

Watch for big changes in the coming weeks, including a new and improved JUICE BAR MENU. We’ve been taste-testing new drinks in the stores, listening to your feedback and pretty soon, we’ll have an outstanding updated menu for you with offerings like…well, I can’t tell you yet 🙂  You’ll just have to come in and try for yourself. And don’t worry, all your tried ‘n’ true old favorites aren’t going anywhere, promise!

Funny how things work out

The funniest thing happened today. Well, not funny-funny but “funny” in the way of how things happen for a reason and coincidences.

We get emails every day for all kinds of reasons, usually customers asking if we have certain products and inquiries from potential vendors telling us about their products. Today we received one of those inquiries that made me go “Hrrmm…interesting.”

The email was from a guy named Ray, telling us about a new product called Heart Juice. He described it as “an all-natural beverage formulated for heart health and is fortified with Hawthorn and Resveratrol along with 5 other heart healthy ingredients.” I looked up their website and read a little about it – all-natural, 20 calories per bottle, antioxidant-rich ingredients such as hawthorn, resveratrol, garlic, pomegranate and green tea.  – and they’re local, from Wayne, NJ. I forwarded the email to our Grocery Manager Owen and told him a little bit about them.

About a half hour later, I’m out by the front and a man comes up to introduce himself to me. “Hi, I’m John, I’m from Heart Juice…” “Really? I seriously JUST emailed you guys back! Owen, remember the company I was telling you about a few minutes ago? Ta-daaa!” Turns out his partner got the email, not even knowing his associate was right there in one of our stores.

Owen and John spoke for a bit and right there we knew, this product was something completely different and special – specifically formulated for heart health and also totally on-point with our mission to raise health awareness and change people’s lives. What a great fit.

An hour later, Heart Juice is on our shelves.
